I write, proofread, and edit documents, articles, manuals, essays, church newsletters, brochures, and manuscripts, etc. I also translate historic documents from Old German handwriting (Suetterlin, Kurrent, Fraktur) into English.

Proofreading and editing

Why might you need my services? Because a second pair of eyes will spot what you missed. Few things are as exasperating as sending off or publishing a document, only to discover that you’ve misspelled a word, left one out, or could have expressed something more clearly than you did. To illustrate my point, only this morning, a grocery store ad in our local newspaper caught my eye:

                                                                We have the healthliest fish.

I bet they wish they'd had a proofreader before they published this ad.

A few years ago, traveling from East to West, I passed a large sign that read:

 Mt. Cavalry Church

To this day, I regret that I didn’t stop to knock on the door of that little church and to point the error out to whoever opened the door. No doubt, this sign elicited a good many smiles from those whizzing by on the Interstate that day.

(For those of you who don't spot the error: It's Calvary.)

 Book/Manuscript Critique:

Do you have a great idea for a book? A manuscript even? But you don’t know whether or not your manuscript has potential? Maybe all you need is some encouragement and some expert advice. I want to help you realize your dream and to finish your book. Please contact me to discuss the scope of your project.

About me:

I am a writer, an editor, and a translator, and have a Ph.D. in English and Comparative Literature. During my college teaching career, if my math serves me right, I have read, corrected, edited, graded, marked upwards of 3000 papers, essays, term papers, articles. I also hold a translator's diploma from the German Department of Industry and Commerce.

I have published five books as well as essays and short stories. Aside from manuscript evaluations, I have transcribed, edited, and compiled the final minutes of the Landmine Project Conference at JMU, have done translations for Merck, and NPR broadcasted one of my stories.

Why do I edit and translate? Because it keeps my little gray cells happy and well functioning when I’m not writing. Besides, I always learn so much from the material you send me. And learning is the best way to keep you young in both mind and heart.

What I will do:

I will go over your work as if with a fine-toothed comb to spot and mark everything that is amiss in terms of spelling, grammar, style, coherence, clarity.

Translations of Historic Documents:

 Old German Handwriting into English

I translate historic, handwritten documents from German into English, such as letters from ancestors, old minutes of various meetings, birth and death certificates, historic journals and diaries, war documents.  I have done so for the Plains District Museum in Timberville and for private individuals, whose forefathers brought such documents from ‘the old country,’ or recorded family histories and Bible inscriptions  in German.

Most of these documents were handwritten in either Suetterlin, Kurrent, or Fraktur, and few can read such old scripts today.
